From the brink of Sepsis to the healthiest version of myself

In 2019, I came within minutes of developing full blown sepsis. What began as a routine hospital visit for a UTI suddenly escalated—my body shook uncontrollably, I couldn’t regulate my temperature, I could hardly move and I was crying uncontrollably.

Thanks to a vigilant nurse, she recognised the symptoms and I received immediate emergency treatment and survived. Recovery took months and I assumed the worst was behind me.

Just bad luck?

A year later, my health collapsed again. My face dropped on one side, my heart raced, I was living with chronic pain and fatigue, and I lost the ability to function normally. Doctors diagnosed a stroke, later labelling it a “mystery illness.”

For two months I could do nothing but move between my sofa and bed, an unrecognisable life for someone who had trained for triathlons and marathons.

When I asked my GP whether this and my earlier near-sepsis were connected and what I should do to prevent my getting ill again, I was told it was “just bad luck.”

I refused to accept that answer. Instead, I began a journey to understand what my body had been through—and how I could make sure it never happened again.

The Turning Point

My healing began with the documentary Heal and the book You Are the Placebo, which opened my eyes to the profound mind-body connection. I then discovered Functional Medicine which looks at the whole person, not just the symptoms.

Comprehensive test revealed a history I’d overlooked: ten years of frequent antibiotic use.

Whilst each illness could be classed as ‘routine’, the frequency was a red flag that something had been going wrong for a while. 25 doses of antibiotics over 10 years had disrupted my gut and likely contributed to my major health episodes. Some of the very medications prescribed for my second health crash had side effects identical to my symptoms.

Road to recovery

Working with a Functional Medicine practitioner, I began a healing protocol:

  • A diet focused on reducing inflammation and allowing my gut to heal and promote a healthy environment for the gut microbiome.
  • Daily practices including breathwork, yoga, mindfulness and cold showers
  • Other self-care protocols including counselling, massages and deep rest

My goal was restoration.

The Results

Gradually, the pain disappeared. My energy returned. My prostate and bladder health normalised to that of someone twenty years younger. I came off medications and I have not required antibiotics for 5 years, since January 2021. And five years on, I can confidently still say I am the healthiest and happiest I’ve ever been.

My wife joined me on this wellness journey, and after addressing her own gut health, she reversed years of food intolerances, addressed the challenges of the menopause and other chronic health conditions. Together, we’ve continued learning more about nutrition, microbiome science, and evidence-based approaches to long-term wellbeing.

What I Learned

Our bodies are ecosystems – not battlefields. When we support our microbiome, care for our mental health, and nourish our mind-body connection, we unlock our natural ability to heal.

Modern Western healthcare is extraordinary for emergencies – but how we each approach prevention, lifestyle, and education are where true transformation happens.

Small, consistent changes can dramatically reduce the risk of autoimmune conditions, chronic disease, inflammation to help reduce the impact of the ageing process.

If you remember just three things:

  1. Love your gut. Feed your microbiome with whole, unprocessed foods – it influences immunity, mood, and longevity.
  2. Protect your mental health. Ten minutes a day of stress-reduction can transform your physiology.
  3. Honour the mind-body connection. When one heals, the other follows.

I truly believe these three principles saved my life. Now, through delivering coaching, I help others discover the same transformation – from surviving to thriving.

The programme was much broader than I expected

Initially I was interested in a coach to help me think about and finds ways to be healthier, with a focus on weight loss, being more agile and energetic and getting a more out of life. I felt I was in a rut and needed some guidance on a ‘better life’. The programme was much
broader than I expected and covered all aspects of health – body, mind and soul.
